Expanding the Westfield Trail Experience: New Trail System Unveiled

With the support of one generous family, the Westfield Heritage Village Conservation Area expands its trails by 2.4 kilometers, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment for all.

A significant milestone was achieved last year with the expansion of the Westfield Heritage Village Conservation Area trail system. An additional 2.4 kilometers of new trails were added to the existing network, bringing the total trail length to 6.7 kilometers to provide a wonderful hiking experience for visitors of all ages.

This project was made possible with the support of the Chakraburtty family and collaborative efforts of HCA staff and board members. In 2016, the HCA acquired the Chakraburtty family property, bridging two previously separated tracts of land. This key acquisition made it possible to develop the trail system and elevate Westfield Heritage Village to a conservation area, while preserving its natural heritage and promoting passive recreational activities. HCA was happy to honour the families request of naming the connection the Chinmaya Trail, and to hold a naming dedication.

These new trails were designed to be inclusive, with stroller and wheelchair accessibility ensured through flat packed gravel surfaces and three new bridges over wetlands and streams. These enhancements allow everyone to experience the area’s scenic beauty and historical charm, while providing convenient crossings and picturesque views.

The expanded trail system has already received positive feedback from the community, highlighting the importance of accessible outdoor spaces. The trails provide an opportunity for visitors to connect with nature, learn about the area’s rich history, and enjoy recreational activities in a serene environment.

Last year, the Foundation granted $121,250 to HCA to enhance trails across the watershed, including those at
Westfield Heritage Village. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors whose support makes these vital trail improvements possible. Your generosity helps ensure that our trails remain beautiful and accessible for everyone to enjoy.
